How to make Nepali sim work in smartphone brought from foreign land

The telecom is even sending sms to users to inform them about the new rule. People can register by filling a for and going to the authorized office at Kamaladi or it can be registered through the internet at eir@nta.gov.np. Typing ‘*#06#’ is enough to know the IMI number of a phone.

Preparation of online registration
To make the process easier, telecom has offered an option to register online. The telecom informed that this was done to make registration process easier.

Telecom has given time up to Ashoj to register the devices and aside from the online registration, a separated branch has been opened solely for the purpose. The process of registration through email and other medium is going on. The authorities even said that preparation is being done to update through online.Nepali sim does not work in phone brought for foreign personally because the IMI number of the phone is not registered in the Nepal Nepal Telecom Authority.

IMI is the short form for International Equipment Identity. After the start of New Year, telecom made strict rule regarding the mobile selling and buying and a registered IMI number is required for a Nepali sim to work in the device.

According to the new rule, every mobile has a IMI number and it is known as a unique number.’ Head of Telecom said, ‘It should be registered and it is compulsory.’

How does it work?
When a sim is inserted in a phone brought for personal use from foreign country, the telecom scans for the unique number of the phone and sees if it is registered. When they do not find it, the sim does not work.

What to do to make it work?
The mobile can be used by registering the IMI number in telecom. It will not work unless registered. So, it should be registered and is compulsory.

When a phone is bought from a authorized mobile shop, the company registers the number themselves. Mobile brought personally from foreign will not be registered.

Phones brought before 1st of Baisakh, have automatically been registered by the network operator. Dublicate phone and phones which do not have IMI number should be registered before Ashoj.
